Common questions

What is Moin?

Moin is an app for voice chat and screen sharing with friends and communities. It’s built from the ground up for low latency, so voice travels directly between people whenever possible.

What if a direct connection isn’t possible?

Some networks, like strict office or school Wi-Fi, block direct connections. Then Moin sends your voice through a relay server, so you stay in the call. It can add a little delay, but your voice stays encrypted: the relay only passes it along and can’t listen in.

Is Moin really free?

Yes. The apps, voice chat and screen sharing are free, with no ads or paid boosts, and so is running a server for your own community. The only paid option is having us host your community, from $4.49 a month. See pricing.

Do I need an account?

No. Choose a nickname and start talking.

What’s the difference between a space and a community?

A space is for right now: open it, invite your friends with a link, and it stays available while you’re in it. A community is more permanent, with multiple rooms where people can come and go.

Can I host my own community?

Yes. You can run a community server yourself for free: read the setup guide. If you’d rather not run it, we host it for you from $4.49 a month. See the plans.

When can I download Moin?

Moin is available now on Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS: get the apps. Android is coming soon: subscribe to the newsletter to hear when it’s ready. Screen sharing is available on desktop.

Is Moin private?

The apps don’t collect analytics or personal information. Connections are encrypted, and voice goes directly between people whenever possible.

Are the demos on this page real?

Yes. They’re the real app running in your browser, driven by the same scripts that test it.
